Must Seen Weekend Getaways from Mumbai with Sitaram Tours

Life in Mumbai is very fast paced and most people are busy with the hustle and bustle of everyday city life. In fact, this is one of the reasons why Mumbai people work so hard and party even harder, because they take holidays so seriously. The problem is they don’t have time for a week-long lavish vacation, making short weekend getaways the next best thing! So, just pack a set of clothes and your swim gear and head to any of these gorgeous weekend getaways around Mumbai:

1. Khandala and Lonavala

The twin hill resorts of Khandala and Lonavala along with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are by far the most popular weekend getaways in the city. A short 3-hour drive away, these hill resort towns are only 5km from each other, and the atmosphere has changed dramatically compared to the humid and crowded conditions of the city. In addition to the tranquil natural beauty, Khandala and Lonavala towns are also known for their unique jaggery-based sweets called chikki. At 625 meters above sea level, the resort town is a godsend for Mumbaians exposed to the city’s relentless humidity and hot weather conditions. These towns are surrounded by camping spots and waterfalls, and many tour operators offer guided tours. Some of the main attractions in and around Khandala & Lonavala include Tiger’s Leap, Lohgad, Karla and Bhaja caves, and the famous Korigad Fort.

2. Kolad

Located on the eastern end of the Kundalika River, Kolad is a quiet village in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. But that’s where the calm ends, as the village is an international white river rafting venue and hosts many water sports. Kolad features picturesque landscapes and pristine waterfalls, some of which flow from the surrounding mountains. Composed of 13 Buddhist caves, the Kuda Caves are a must-see attraction not to be missed. The small village also houses the Tara Fort, a 4th-century fortress that stands alone in the middle of the forest, overlooking the main village. For engineering buffs, Kolad is home to the Bhira Dam, part of the Bhira Hydroelectric Project.

3. Ratnagiri

Home to the world-famous Alphonso Mangoes, Ratnagiri is a port city located near Mahabaleshwar. The region is surrounded by the Sahyadris mountain ranges to the east and is home to a number of historical monuments, including the Thiba Palace, where the King of Burma was sent into exile. Ratnagiri also has several historical temples and mausoleums. The port city is in close proximity to several beautiful beaches including Anjarle Beach, Ganapatipule Beach and Guhagar Beach. Another unique attraction is the Bhagwati Fort, also known as Ratnadurga, which sits on top of a hill and is surrounded by the sea on three sides.

4. Mahabaleshwar

If there is a weekend getaway to go during the monsoons, Mahabaleshwar is the place. A gushing waterfall, only open during monsoons, the hill station complements the lush greenery of Lake Venna below. The most prolific waterfall in the area is Lingamala Falls, which disappears and reappears due to the mist at that height. But be aware that while the monsoons bring beauty, they can also get in the way of any trekking or outdoor camping plans you may have. If you’re going trekking, Wilson’s Point is worth a visit just for the spectacular views.

5. Alibaug

Another popular weekend destination close to Mumbai is Alibaug. Coastal towns are accessible by road and also by ferry from Gateway of India. The town is known for its beaches, but is a better destination for those with historically inclined because of the presence of an old fort in the area. Built during the reign of the warrior king Shivaji, the Alibaug fort is synonymous with the town. About 30 kilometers from the town center, visitors can find the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary. The town has many trendy beaches, including those of Versoli, Nagaon, Kashid and Akshi. Another hill fort in the area is the Sagargad Fort, which is mostly in ruins but definitely worth a visit. The town is famous for its seafood and bird watching.

6. Panchgani

Panchgani is a beautiful weekend getaway just 240 kilometers from Mumbai city. Surrounded by seamless hillsides and pristine lakes on all sides, it’s a great family getaway. Visitors can visit the numerous former British and Parsi homes to give them a glimpse of the past, as most of the buildings in the area exude a rustic old-world charm. The hill station has some beautiful walkways covered with lush trees and other plants.

7. Amboli

Amboli is a peaceful hill station located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, surrounded by lush forests and protected by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). This hill station is best known as Mumbai’s most romantic outstation getaway and one of the country’s most popular honeymoon destinations. Located at 690 m above sea level, this unique coastal hill station offers visitors the coolest weather in the region. This beautiful hill station offers stunning views of the various surrounding valleys. Amboli is about a 500km drive from Mumbai and is best visited between October and March.
