Top 05 Must Seen Places to Visit in Mumbai

There are not as many historical sites in Mumbai as in some places in India, but its diversity more than compensates for this. You will find everything from beaches to picnic spots and religious sites.

Not only that, but when it comes to a rich history, the city can fill up page after page, and when it comes to nightlife, it can make anywhere in the country a good run for the money. On top of that, Mumbai is truly a must-see place to see in India that will also leave you with fond memories for the days following your visit.

Don’t miss these 5 attractions in Mumbai, so if you’re planning a trip to this action-packed city, you won’t miss a single aspect of it.

The Gateway of India

Mumbai’s most recognizable monument, the Gateway of India, was built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city. It was also where the last British troops departed, marking the end of British rule when India gained independence in 1947. The looming Gateway is designed to be the first thing tourists see as they approach Mumbai by boat. This is a popular place to start exploring Mumbai. These days, the atmosphere around the monument is sometimes circus-like, with many vendors peddling everything from balloons to chai tea.

Location: On the waterfront in Colaba, South Mumbai. Opposite the Taj Palace and Tower (which is also worth a look inside)

Juhu and Marine Drive Chaupati Beaches

After a tiring day of sightseeing, join the locals to relax and enjoy the sunset on the beaches of Juhu and Marine Drive. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also enjoy delicious snacks from the many food stalls and mobile food vendors. Favorites include grilled corn on the cob, bhel puri, pani puri, and pav bhaji.

Location: Juhu is located about 30 kilometers north of the city center, and Marine Drive Chowpatty is in the south of Mumbai, a short drive from the Gateway of India.

Siddhivinayak Temple

Probably one of the most beautiful temples located in Mumbai, the Siddhivinayak Temple is definitely a must-see in the city. Every day, over 20,000 devotees gather in the temple to offer their prayers in the temple, and on Tuesdays, there are special “puja” and “darshan” events. Bollywood celebrities also visit Siddhivinayak in search of blessings. Visiting this place, you can admire the ancient architectural style of the temple and its many features.

Location: Siddhivinayak Temple is about a 15-minute walk from Dadar Railway Station. Nonetheless, one can even rent a cab or taxi to reach the temple. Moreover, there are private buses to Siddhivinayak Temple from different routes. So how to get to Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai is not something to worry about.

Haji Ali

The majestic Haji Ali is both a mosque and a tomb. It was built in 1431 by the wealthy Muslim merchant and Sufi saint, Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who was inspired to change the course of his life after a trip to Mecca. It also contains his body. Located in the middle of the ocean, Haji Ali is only accessible from a 500-yard narrow walkway at low tide.

Location: Central Mumbai, off the Worley Coast, close to Mahalakshmi train station.

Elephanta Caves

While they’re nowhere near as impressive as Maharashtra’s famous Ajanta and Ellora caves, the ancient rock-cut caves on Elephanta Island are worth visiting if you’re spending a few days in Mumbai. There are two groups – one Buddhist and one Hindu. The huge main cave, dedicated to Lord Shiva, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It has some impressive sculptures and artwork. Take the ferry from Gateway of India to get there. If you want to head further, there are also Buddhist caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park on the northern outskirts of the city.

Location: Elephanta Island is located 10 kilometers east of Mumbai. The Kanheri Buddhist Caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a suburb of Borivali, 40 kilometers north of central Mumbai.
